I recently engaged in an enlightening conversation with Dr. Emily Hayes, a paediatric neurologist and integral member of this research endeavour. Her enthusiasm and insights not only underscored the transformative potential of technology in healthcare but also highlighted the commitment and dedication driving these advancements.

Dr. Hayes explained, “Each year, over 300,000 newborns are admitted to NICUs across the United States. Traditional methods of assessing neurological status are often sporadic and can lack precision. Our goal was to develop a system capable of continuously monitoring infants, offering real-time insights into their neurological health.”
The Mount Sinai team embarked on this ambitious project with a compelling hypothesis: video feeds from NICUs could be harnessed to track infant movements and predict neurological changes. “Pose AI” was born from this concept, utilising sophisticated machine learning techniques to analyse anatomical landmarks captured in video data. Dr. Hayes described how the team trained the AI on an extensive dataset, which included over 16 million seconds of video footage from 115 infants in the NICU at Mount Sinai. The algorithm demonstrated consistent accuracy across various conditions, whether during the day, at night, or under phototherapy, a testament to its robustness.
The capabilities of Pose AI are remarkable, accurately predicting conditions such as sedation and cerebral dysfunction, thus paving the way for quicker interventions and improved health outcomes.
