Established in 2017, Suki has amassed $165 million in venture capital to develop its AI-driven voice assistant, specifically designed to alleviate the documentation challenges faced by physicians.
Suki’s AI assistant has already garnered recognition for its proficiency in enabling physicians to access crucial patient information—such as medications, vital signs, allergies, and surgical histories—via voice commands. It further aids in the dictation of clinical notes, schedule management, and assists with ICD-10 coding. The latest update to Suki’s offering introduces two innovative features: patient summaries and a Q&A function, both poised to significantly enhance the efficiency of clinical workflows.
The introduction of the patient summary feature addresses the pervasive issue of information overload that many healthcare providers encounter. By offering a succinct summary of a patient’s previous appointments, this tool enables clinicians to swiftly review essential details, thereby conserving the time and mental effort traditionally expended on navigating through individual encounter notes. This feature is anticipated to streamline the preparatory process for patient appointments, allowing clinicians to concentrate more on patient care rather than the administrative intricacies.
Complementing this is the Q&A functionality, which further augments the AI assistant’s capabilities. It empowers physicians to pose direct questions regarding patient chart data and receive immediate responses. For example, a doctor can inquire about the date of a patient’s last EKG, and Suki’s tool will promptly supply the pertinent information. Beyond patient-specific inquiries, the Q&A feature extends its utility by addressing medical reference questions. It accomplishes this by searching and summarising information from validated sources, thereby serving as an extensive knowledge resource for healthcare providers. These new features represent a strategic manoeuvre by Suki to differentiate itself from competitors such as Abridge, DeepScribe, and Microsoft, who also offer AI-powered solutions for documentation and coding. Suki’s CEO, Punit Soni, has highlighted that no other AI healthcare assistant currently provides both patient summary and Q&A capabilities, positioning Suki’s tool as the first comprehensive clinical assistant in the market.
The development of these capabilities was realised through collaboration with Google Cloud, selected for its advanced technology capable of efficiently searching across various data sources and formats. This partnership underscores the critical role of leveraging robust technological infrastructure to deliver cutting-edge solutions within the healthcare sector.
At present, more than 300 healthcare providers are utilising Suki’s AI assistant, including prominent health systems like Ascension St. Thomas and Ozarks Healthcare. A select group of clinicians is already employing the patient summary feature, with plans for broader availability on the horizon. The Q&A feature is slated for release next year, promising to further extend the tool’s reach and influence.
