Building Cyber Resilience: New Programme Tackles Burnout Crisis

In the dynamic and ever-evolving realm of cyber threats, the mental well-being of cyber security professionals is emerging as a pivotal component in upholding effective digital defences. Acknowledging this burgeoning issue, Cybermindz and Gibbs Consulting have joined forces to inaugurate a pioneering mental resilience programme tailored specifically for the United Kingdom’s cyber security workforce. This initiative is a landmark step in addressing the mental health challenges faced by professionals in this high-pressure field.

Recent studies reveal a troubling narrative regarding the mental health status within the cyber security industry. A striking 50% of professionals have reported experiencing burnout over the past year, while 35% foresee reaching burnout within the next six months. Alarmingly, 80% anticipate facing burnout over the next three years. These figures highlight the necessity for targeted interventions and support systems to bolster the mental well-being of those on the front lines of digital defence. Government research from September 2024 further underscores the challenges, noting that nearly half of businesses lack employees confident in executing essential cyber security tasks. Additionally, the industry faces a significant shortage of advanced skills, such as penetration testing and incident response. Confidence in managing cyber incidents has diminished, with 48% of organisations doubting their capacity to handle breaches, a stark increase from 27% in 2020. The industry also grapples with a shortage of 11,200 professionals and a worrying 22% decline in female participation in key roles over the past three years.

The collaboration between Cybermindz and Gibbs Consulting seeks to address these critical issues by offering 50 fully-funded places in Cybermindz’s BaseCamp™ programme. This innovative training course merges neuroscience-based techniques with military-proven methods to aid cyber security experts in regaining mental resilience and sustaining peak performance under stress. A cornerstone of the programme is the Integrative Restoration (iRest®) method, developed by US mental health pioneer Dr. Richard Miller. This peer-informed approach equips participants with practical tools to combat burnout and sustain resilience, making it particularly suitable for high-stress roles such as CISOs, SOC analysts, red teamers, and incident responders.

The significance of mental resilience in cyber security cannot be overstated. Farida Gibbs, Founder and CEO of Gibbs Consulting, underscores the critical nature of this initiative: “We are witnessing an unsustainable level of mental health challenges within cyber security. Our collaboration with Cybermindz.org is not just timely—it’s essential. By underwriting these training places, we’re sending a message that mental resilience support is critical, not optional. We want to ensure that those at the front lines of cyber defence are equipped not only to protect our digital assets but also to safeguard their own well-being.” Peter Coroneos, Founder of Cybermindz, emphasises the transformative potential of the programme: “This partnership signifies a commitment to the health of the cyber security workforce. By offering these early adopter placements, we’re not only expanding Cybermindz’s reach in the UK but directly empowering those in critical roles and adding momentum to a growing movement that recognises the importance of mental resilience as a key pillar of cyber security.”

Feedback from programme participants attests to the programme’s positive impact. Simon Orcsik, a SOC Team Leader, remarked: “Cybermindz offers crucial strategies to help people in the industry manage stress, improve their cognitive recovery and focus. I have not seen anything offered like this in the industry. The programme has had a great effect on my burnout recovery; I highly recommend it as a very good addition to the cyber defender’s toolkit.” Joseph Miller, an Information Security Manager, expressed his gratitude: “As an Information Security Manager who has battled severe anxiety for years, I am deeply grateful for the incredible support and services provided. This work is invaluable, and knowing there are people like you in the field gives me great hope and joy for the future. I cannot express enough how impactful your assistance has been; it’s helped me unwind and stay calm, using the techniques we discussed multiple times. Thank you for making such a significant difference in my life.”

In essence, the mental resilience programme launched by Cybermindz and Gibbs Consulting signifies a major advancement in supporting the mental health of cyber security professionals. By tackling the root causes of burnout and offering practical tools for maintaining resilience, this initiative not only enhances individual well-being but also fortifies the overall capacity of the cyber security workforce to safeguard digital assets effectively. As the industry continues to confront escalating challenges, such initiatives are indispensable in ensuring that cyber security professionals are equipped to meet the demands of their roles while protecting their mental health.
