The Indian Society of Radiographers and Technologists (ISRT) in Jammu and Kashmir recently celebrated World Radiography Day 2024 with the launch of the Jammu Academic Club. This initiative, commemorating the 129th anniversary of the discovery of X-rays, aims to elevate radiographic expertise and refine professional skills across the region. Hosted at Hotel Ishant in Vijaypur, the event drew a diverse group of radiographers and technologists from notable institutions like AIIMS Jammu and GMC Jammu, as well as participants from Rajouri and Doda.
The ceremony commenced with a keynote address by Dr. Khanak Nandholia, Assistant Professor of Radiodiagnosis and Imaging at AIIMS Jammu. Dr. Nandholia lauded the radiography community for its commitment to both academic and clinical excellence, stressing the critical need for ongoing education to enhance patient care. He highlighted that as technology advances, so must the knowledge and skills of healthcare professionals, underscoring lifelong learning as fundamental to optimal healthcare service delivery.
An esteemed panel of speakers graced the event, including Dr. Shivam Kumar RSO, Dr. Sheetal Sharma RSO, Mr. Ashwani Sr. Tech from AIIMS Jammu, and Mr. Shabir Ahmad Sheikh Sr. Tech from GMC Jammu. These experts shared valuable insights into the ever-evolving field of radiography, focusing on emerging technologies, regulatory advancements, and the expanding roles that professionals must adopt to meet the demands of modern healthcare systems. Such dialogues underscored the importance of staying ahead in a rapidly changing medical landscape.
Mr. Bilal A Dar, Regional Coordinator of ISRT North West, highlighted the significance of the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP) Act, 2021. This legislation standardises curricula and enhances career prospects for radiographers and technologists. He acknowledged the efforts of government bodies, particularly the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the Prime Minister, in strengthening the support for allied health professionals. “The Jammu Academic Club will act as a pivotal centre for updating knowledge on contemporary medical technology, fostering professional collaboration, and ultimately improving patient care,” he observed.
Miss Syed Nahida, ISRT Spokesperson, spotlighted national and international academic initiatives spearheaded by ISRT, including the formation of ISRT Academic Clubs and the Indian College of Radiological Technology (ICRT). These platforms are integral for advancing skills among technologists, students, and radiographers, cultivating a community of informed and proficient professionals in the radiology sector. The event further featured ISRT India’s General Secretary, Mr. Suresh Malayath, who shared the organisation’s notable achievements on both national and global stages. He expressed gratitude to the Government of India for launching the NCAHP web portal, a significant move towards elevating the standards in allied health professions across the country.
President of ISRT, Mr. Mohanlal Bhagwat, took a moment to reflect on the history of radiography and the discovery of the X-ray. He reiterated ISRT’s unwavering commitment to curriculum development, welfare initiatives for radiology professionals, and the advancement of the field to better serve healthcare needs. Additionally, Mr. Commander Daniel KJ, Public Relations Secretary of ISRT, urged professionals and students to contribute research articles and case studies to the ALARA Radiographers Magazine, fostering a culture of continuous learning and best practices within the community.
The success of the event was supported by a dedicated organising team from the ISRT J&K Chapter, with notable contributions from members affiliated with AIIMS Jammu, GMC Jammu, and the State Cancer Institute. Key figures included Mr. Abid A Khanday, Mr. Sheikh Umer Rashid, Miss Sabrat Mushtaq, Mr. Wahid, Miss Indu Padmani Singh, Miss Shaina Sharma, and Mr. Ayush from AIIMS Jammu. Leaders from the ISRT Srinagar Academic Club also played an instrumental role, with Chairman Mr. Gayasudin Teli, Vice Chairman Mr. Bilal A Allaie, Joint Secretary Mr. Zahid Hamid from SKIMS Bemina, and Treasurer Mr. Wajid from the private sector, stressing the importance of maintaining a work-life balance for healthcare professionals in high-pressure environments. They emphasised that prioritising mental and physical well-being is crucial to delivering high-quality patient care and mitigating burnout.
As the event drew to a close, Mr. Abid Ahmad Khanday from AIIMS Vijaypur delivered a heartfelt vote of thanks, expressing appreciation to all attendees and acknowledging the support of Hotel Ishant management for hosting this noteworthy celebration. The establishment of the Jammu Academic Club marks a significant stride forward in ISRT’s mission to cultivate growth, facilitate knowledge sharing, and promote excellence among radiographers and radiological technologists in Jammu and Kashmir. Through such initiatives, the organisation continues to foster a dynamic and progressive professional community, poised to meet the challenges and opportunities of the future in healthcare.
