Euclidean algorithm for finding the greatest common divisor is perhaps one of the earliest formalisations of an algorithm [1]. Complexity theory seeks to classify computational problems based on their inherent difficulty. Problems are grouped into complexity classes, such as P (problems solvable in polynomial time) and NP (problems verifiable in polynomial time). The famous P versus NP problem [5] asks whether every problem whose solution can be quickly verified can also be quickly solved. This remains one of the most important unsolved problems in computer science, with profound implications for cryptography, optimization, and many other areas.

  1. So, the halting problem is undecidable? Does this mean my Roomba’s existential crisis as it endlessly bumps into walls is also unsolvable? Asking for a friend (it’s me, I’m the friend).

    • Haha! That’s a great analogy! While the Roomba’s bumping might not be *exactly* the Halting Problem, it certainly highlights the challenges of predicting complex system behavior.
