SES Water: Pioneering Security with Zero Trust

In a rapidly evolving digital landscape, SES Water emerges as a leader in the utility sector by integrating cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) and bolstering cybersecurity measures. With an ambitious £413.9 million strategic development plan spanning five years, the company is redefining the water utility domain, enhancing operational resilience and service delivery. Serving over 750,000 residents across Surrey, Kent, and South London, SES Water’s initiatives are not just significant but set a benchmark for utility providers worldwide.

A key element in SES Water’s strategy is its collaboration with iboss, a Zero Trust Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) vendor, marking a pivotal enhancement in cybersecurity. This partnership focuses on implementing a Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA) model, ensuring stringent data access protocols for employees. In critical national infrastructure such as SES Water, adhering to security frameworks like the UK’s Cyber Assessment Framework (CAF) is imperative. The UK’s National Cyber Strategy 2022 highlights vulnerabilities in critical sectors, including utilities. By adopting iboss’s solutions, SES Water mitigates risks posed by cyber threats while promoting employee welfare through vigilant monitoring of web activities, enabling timely interventions and fostering a safer work environment.

Incorporating AI into its operations, SES Water completed a groundbreaking two-year pilot in October 2024, utilising the Opir machine-learning algorithm developed by Royal HaskoningDHV. This AI tool forecasts water demand with remarkable precision by analysing variables such as reservoir flow, weather conditions, and time of day. Tested at the Cheam and Woodmansterne treatment sites, Opir enhances resource management and optimises water distribution. By anticipating water consumption up to 72 hours in advance, SES Water reduces energy and chemical usage, aligning with its sustainability goals. This initiative underscores AI’s transformative potential in utility operations, offering a scalable model for future integration across the organisation.

Looking forward, SES Water’s strategic blueprint includes significant investments in smart metering and the modernisation of water softening facilities. These advancements are critical for improving water quality and operational efficiency, demonstrating SES Water’s commitment to sustainability and customer satisfaction. As part of the Pennon Group, SES Water is well-positioned to leverage additional resources and expertise, fostering innovation and setting new standards across the industry.

SES Water is also pioneering AI-driven leak detection technology, setting a precedent in transforming water management. By deploying 1,000 sensors across its network, the company monitors water flow and pressure in real-time. This data enables rapid leak detection, allowing maintenance teams to address issues promptly, often before customers are aware of any impact. This proactive approach has cut leakage run times by up to 40%, a significant achievement for a utility serving 160 million litres of water daily to approximately 300,000 homes and businesses.

Despite these advances, challenges persist, particularly in addressing water scarcity in the south-east of England. SES Water’s efforts must form part of a broader strategy to enhance resilience and sustainability in water management. The Water Resources South East (WRSE) has warned that without further improvements, the region may face severe restrictions, potentially incurring economic losses of £1.3 billion per day. SES Water’s initiatives, while commendable, highlight the ongoing need for comprehensive solutions to ensure long-term water security.

The acquisition of SES Water by the Pennon Group in January 2024 positions the company to further enhance its capabilities. With access to additional resources and expertise, SES Water is poised to continue its pioneering work in AI and sustainable water management. The company’s forward-thinking approach is a testament to its leadership in the industry and its commitment to future challenges.

SES Water’s initiatives offer a visionary model for the utility sector. By integrating AI and cybersecurity, the company enhances operational efficiency and sets a high standard for resilience and service excellence. As the industry navigates increasing pressures, SES Water’s innovative strategies serve as a valuable roadmap, inspiring others to embrace technology and sustainability in pursuit of a secure and efficient future in water management.
