The introduction of the Dragon Ambient Experience (DAX) at Owensboro Health heralds a significant shift in the way healthcare providers engage with technology. Developed by Nuance, with the backing of Optum IT, DAX is an AI-driven tool that automatically documents patient visits. By listening to conversations during in-person or telehealth consultations, DAX generates clinical notes without requiring doctors to manually enter data into a computer system.

Dr Bridget Burshears, Assistant Chief Medical Information Officer at Owensboro Health, underscores the profound impact of this technology on patient care. “DAX lets us reconnect with our patients,” she asserts. Traditionally, the process of documenting patient interactions necessitated doctors to split their attention between the patient and the computer screen, creating a barrier to effective communication. With DAX, this barrier is eliminated, fostering more meaningful and personal interactions.

The deployment of DAX is not solely about improving efficiency; it is also focused on enhancing the quality of care provided. Patients are required to give verbal or written consent before the tool is employed, ensuring that their privacy and autonomy are upheld. The AI operates through an app on a phone, securely linking to Owensboro Health’s electronic health record system. Crucially, recordings are not stored on the phone itself, and all data is de-identified and purged after a specified period, addressing potential privacy concerns.

Since the pilot programme commenced on 2 December with nearly 50 Owensboro Health providers, the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Physicians report increased efficiency and more opportunity for direct engagement with patients. “Providers have told us how much they’ve enjoyed being able to focus on their patients instead of worrying about documentation,” Dr Burshears notes. Presently, the technology is utilised for outpatient care across various specialties, including paediatrics, family medicine, obstetrics, and surgery. It is implemented in Owensboro Health’s ambulatory settings, encompassing HealthPlex locations in Henderson and Muhlenberg County and offices in Twin Lakes. The potential for expansion is substantial, with plans to extend its use to emergency departments, inpatient care, and nursing assessments as the technology advances.

A common concern regarding AI adoption in healthcare is the fear of job displacement. However, Dr Burshears clarifies that DAX is meant to complement existing roles rather than replace them. “This doesn’t replace jobs,” she emphasises. “It generates a note that the physician reviews and signs after the visit. It’s about refocusing us on why we went into medicine — to build relationships and help patients.” For patients, this technology facilitates more personal and heartfelt conversations with their physicians. It is a mutually beneficial scenario: improved documentation, enhanced efficiency, and stronger relationships with those they care for.
